Greetings to the people of Pakistan and with warm congratulations upon an election with an estimated 60% turnout; more, the peaceful handover of one elected government to create another since the formation of Pakistan.
The challenges for Mr Sharif are as considerable as for his forebears - Conservative Friends of Pakistan wish him and his Opposition all success in meeting the needs of country.
Perhaps one of the most sensitive issues from the UK perspective will be to ensure the new Government passes effective legislation to bring the elite families within the taxation net and demonstrate transparent spending of State funds. In this way, Pakistan can hope to continue receiving international aid to meet key needs - without proper taxation and transparency UK taxpayers will question their continuing financial support.
On the international stage, Mr Sharif has already stated that his priority is to build stronger links and relationships with India; this is to be most welcomed as this paves the way forward for peace and, perhaps, a resolution of the long running dispute in Kashmir which requires a political solution.
As our Prime Minister, David Cameron, has so often said - the ties between the UK and Pakistan are unbreakable. And in this I feel sure the British Government will continue to work closely with the new Administration.
